2nd Annual Victoria Motorcycle Swap Meet
Ian was a former member of the Club in the 50's and 60's and used to work for Reg Shanks as a mechanic. He was always keen to ride in "scrambles" and trials and was a big helper at many events. Sadly, Ian passed away January 21st, 2010 in the Campbell River Hospital.
VMC monthly meeting location has changed STARTING IN 2010
Please note that as of January 2010, all VMC monthly meetings will be held at Steve Drane Harley Davidson at 7:30 pm.
Thanks to Allan Piercy, we have a modern day example of the kind of thing that used to be a modern thing but you don't see much of any more. (Skilled filming kept the entire cheering section out of the video but you can still hear them loud and clear). Thanks Allan.

RESULTS ARE IN Please click the VMC Results item in the left menu to see the full standings. The Brentwood was held on Sunday, November 1st at Tansky Main. Results are to follow. Here is a ride report from Tim Agar:
First off let me give you a little perspective on the person writing this race report. I love tough races, the more evil the course the bigger the grin on my face. :P I have always loved the Brentwood, ever since I discovered it. The Brentwood in my opinion is the one remaining event on the VMC schedule that is truly an expert level event. With the Terra Nova being down graded to a trail ride over the last few years, the Brentwood is the one bright spot on the VMC schedule. All right down to the details. Gary Nordstom and Peter Sprague laid out a great 30 K loop through the hills of Tansky, and let me tell you those hills were alive with the sound of cursing. Gary also made a decision to let the best rider win and put the speed up to 24kph. This speed was unachievable for mere mortals, so it came down to fitness, talent and tenacity, all ingredients I was sorely lacking on this day. We all headed out of the pit area and immediately hit a trail named the GATER. The Gater and the next 10k of trail was the evil alchemy of the mad scientist Chris Stokes:evil: and it was truly evil this day, with steep climbs through 1 ft + deep mud mixed with polished roots and rock, giving you zero time outside of survival mode. Once free of the Gator, we received a quick reprieve from the pain as we emerged on to the fire road for about a minute, then back into a nice flowing deactivated skidder trail that tempted you to twist the grip at the risk of become a inch short if you missed seeing one of the deactivations. We then found ourselves dumped out onto the top of the new CandyCane lane trail, which I have since rename the "DIRTY STICK" as it seem far more appropriate because it was a mess of deep sink holes, interconnected with 6 inch deep, greasy mud. Once you finished sliding down the DIRTY STICK to the N300 fire road, you got about a minute to gather you wits and start telling yourself to get back on the pipe. I should have known better, because as I dropped in off the N300 I thought I saw a guy in a red suit with a forked tail laughing at me. I don't know the name of this trail, but I think it should be call the "Evil Beeatch" This sucker is tight and I mean reeaaally tight, and at the same time steep and I mean can't stay on the seat steep and at the same time rooty and I mean snakes and ladders rooty and at the same time rocky and I mean rock garden rocky and at the same time muddy and not nice mud but the super deep, gooy type that gets on your seat and is slipperier then goose poop on linoleum. When I finally made it to the top of this climb, I was wheezing like an asthmatic with pig flu. Did I mention I LOVED this race?
Once the heart rate dropped below 220 I was off again. The next section of trail was equally ugly, fortunately it was relatively flat, but once again there was no let up in the tree dodging. Finally we burst out into a clear cut and the first check, there was Boomer sipping water and telling me how every one before me said the trail was easy and to suck it up.
Through the check and off I went, climbing through the clear cut with a thousand sideways logs, up into the trees where the sink holes and floating log bridges awaited, then it was out onto the N300 once again. Finally a break, as we headed up the N300 for about 1 Km. Normally I would be flying on a fire road, looking to makeup time on a section like this, today however it was all about reeling my tongue back into my head and getting ready for the next round of punishment.
>From here it was all downhill, literally, equally challenging to everything previos, only this time gravity was on my side. Down the hardhat trail, up the Husaberg trail and then down Tansky main to the pits.
Once back at the pits I took stock. I had about 50 lbs of mud stuck to me and 75lbs stuck to my bike. I realized almost immediately that if I didn’t head out in the next few minutes all this mud would set up like concrete and some one would have to chip me off the road. So quick gulp of water and the back out to see my friend the GATER.
=======================Race Report Ends===========================
I would like to thank Gary Nordstrom for putting on a first class event and having the back bone to truly give us an expert level loop.
A shout should also go out to Peter Sprague and the whole BCORMA crew who have whipped the Tansky into a first class riding area.
Can’t wait for next year!

Was held on Sept 6th. The following event report is from Peter Sprague: Click the image to see the full gallery of images courtesy of Peter Sprague with the report and full results.
From Peter Sprague: First of, I must thank all the volunteers that made this happen, and the paid trail crew that worked all summer on many of the trails ridden: Andy James (kids race), Mike Iverson (trails, sign-up, and check), Jodi (sign-up, check), Mike Charchuck (trails, kids race), Tim Agar (arrowing & pre-ride, kids race, sweep) and the trail crew - Dianne, Chris, Keaton, Nick, and Trevor. Left Victoria that morning hoping against all weather reports for light showers. Pavement was dry at home, raining buckets by the time we got to Sooke. Maybe we will get seven riders I mumbled to Jodi on the way out. 15 mm of rain, with sun the day before and after. Soil went from tack to slime. Fifty heart souls showed up to stand under the four tents (KTM, Gas Gas, Kawasaki, Honda) provided by the local dealers with the Kids Race starting at 10:20 Equalizer '09 Race results for Kids Hare Scramble 1.5 K loop Sept-6-09 1st place with 3 laps (in 15 mins) Patrick Fair on a Gas Gas 50cc trial 2nd place with 3 laps (only 7 seconds behind Patrick) Colin Auchterlonie on a KX 85 3rd place with 2 laps Ryan Auchterlonie (cousin to Colin) on a KTM 85 4th place with 2 laps Nicholas James on a TT-R 90 (stalling within sight of the finish line) 5th place with 2 laps Josh Hasset on a KX-85 (recovering nicely from a few mishaps) (Full results are available here as pdf) (and here as an excel spreadsheet) A special thanks to the parents who helped out. Main Event: 45 riders riding either an A or B loop. 1 lap for the novices, 2 for Intermediate and Vet Experts (12 - 17 km/hr), and 3 laps for the Experts (18 - 24 km/hr). The course went up the mountain and returned to the pits, then went back up the mountain on the west side and returned for a little under 30 km laps. There were 3 A/B splits, with a good serving of true A to those choosing to call themselves A riders. The B riders still had it tough in a few sections of the new hare scrabble circuit after all the rains, but otherwise they were spared the tougher trails at Tansky. Course was: A loop = 29.5 km, B loop = 26.2 km First out at 11:20 am. Last back at 17:09 1) Ken K. of the KenCo race team (Expert) Ken's quote before his going out on the last 1/2 of the 2nd lap: "If I don't come back, just put dumb %$#& on my tombstone". Lucky for him he stuck it out. 2) Andy James (Intermediate) 3) Kerrie Stokes (Novice) 4) Ryan Clarke (Expert) 5) Wayne Anderson of the Kenco race team (Intermediate) All smiles and mud, though Gary N. said, with a smile, "You should run while you can" after the first lap. "I'll just make that my Brentwood circuit". Experts were to run three laps, but they were all quitters after two. Mumbling something about mud and hills. There was a hill with more foot marks then treads. Nobody made the 2:30 cut to go back out for the 3rd lap. A number of novices stuck with it and finished, with Kerrie coming in 3rd. Hope everyone comes out again next year. We will have even more trail, a new parking facility with rough camping. Make it a weekend outing for the family. Four guys from the club came in last Thurs (mid-day) and said they were heading up to Tansky (from what I hear there were no vehicles to follow up). They told Marni at Receptionthey were going to stay off North mainline (don’t know how this would be accomplishedbecause as you know, you need to drive on North M/L until just past the 2 mile – I’m guessing the meant they were heading up to Tansky through the gate). Either they or some other motorcyclists scared the heck out of one of our drivers coming down the hill later in the afternoon at the 3 1/2 mile when they came across them. Nothingoccurred with the exception of the potential for an accident. There are too many corners and it is too steep for the drivers to stop quickly between 1.5 and 5 mile on North mainline; the drivers are concerned a motorized vehicle is going to wipe out under the truck, that the driver will have to make a maneuver that makes the load shift (very dangerous as the logs can go through the cab and kill the driver) or that the driver will have to drive off the road to avoid a motorcyclist. Having recreational vehicles without radios on the road during working hours is potentially a lethal mix. I know you’ve taken some actions already on your end concerning this. This information is all second hand, however, we still wanted to pass this incident on to you to keep you apprised I hear about on my end so you know there are still issues we need to continue to work to resolve. Do you have any suggestions above and beyond what we’ve already discussed? of near-misses Marie
Please note the amendments to the VMC rules
Per Barb Lohrmann and Dan McLaren, the rules have been amended per notes in the VMC rules menu item.

The BCORMA trail pass has been adopted by the VMC
From President Ben Hircock: The membership unanimously voted on a motion to make a BCORMA trail pass a requirement to ride ALL VMC off-road events including dual sport and hill climb. The cost is 30 dollars per year and the pass works across the province. Extra passes will be available for those people who use more than one helmet and passes for those under 18 years are free. Passes will be available for purchase at all VMC off-road events and at meetings. Quite a number of passes were sold at the meeting already and I encourage members and non-members to participate in this program, as the benefits will come back to the riding public, club members or not. Also with the introduction of the Trail pass our trail maintenance fee has been dropped and the account set up for it will now be the Trail Pass account. As a note to future committees, we will need to include on posters for events, the requirement for a pass and that they will be on hand at events. As with any new initiative there will be hiccups, a lot of discussion has gone into the details of this program across the province by the 19 or so member clubs, so most of the obvious stuff has been addressed.
Please see the forum topic BCORMA trail pass if you wish to comment on or discuss the BCORMA trail pass. The VMC is a volunteer organization. As such, all events are done for the members and public, by the members. Volunteering to help on one of the events is the best way to get to know people and to help make a good name for yourself, along with making the event a success. Check the forums for the events discussion to see what you can help out with or just send an email to the VMC with a general offer to help. Also, you can usually find a contact email or phone number within the events calendar (from the main menu) if you want to help with a specific event. Aside from being one of the entrance requirements, volunteering some time is educational, often good fitness, and a fun way to become more a part of this club that we all enjoy. A message from Ben Hircock, VMC President regarding riding at Kapoor and Burnt Bridge:
I talked with Shawnigan RCMP recently regarding them putting notices on peoples vehicles indicating that unlicensed vehicles ( dirt bikes, quads etc) will be getting fined for having no insurance if caught on that public road ( Renfrew road in and around Burnt Bridge area). Local residents and the logging company have both apparently complained, causing the RCMP to enforce the rules of the road in that area. Ben. As a club, we make every attempt to work with residents and authorities towards obtaining permanent riding areas with the proper permissions. Members and non-members alike should be aware that riding an unlicensed vehicle on public roads not only carries a hefty fine and is not condoned by the VMC, but perhaps more importantly, this reflects poorly on all motorcyclists, VMC member or not, and makes the task of obtaining legitimate riding areas that much more difficult. VMC members, please take this information under advisement and pass the information and the content of this message along to non-members who may be riding in this area. VMC
