Gentlemen:
I'm the BCAS unit chief at the Port Renfrew Ambulance Station. I was wondering if you could do anything to help get the word out to the motorcycling public regarding a high hazard area for motorcycles on West Coast Road at the Sombrio switchback. We have had repeated MVA's in the same short stretch of road, which have usually resulted in minor injuries. However, the last incident was a fatality. I've contacted Mainroad and the Ministry of Highways regarding better signs, but don't have any commitment yet on improvements. Please feel free to contact me for more information, at least as much as I can release without violating patient confidentiality rules.

I should let you know the exact location of the stretch of road that's causing the problem. It is just before the Sombrio switchback when you're coming towards Victoria from Port Renfrew. When you come off the second large Sombrio Bridge, there's a fairly long decreasing radius right hand curve. After about 200 meters or so, the road bends to the left and drops down a short steep hill into a sharp left hand bend, and then down into the sharp right-hand switch back. For some reason, the accidents are happening as the bikes come down the short steep hill. There are a couple of bumps in the road, but nothing that I see that should be causing as many incidents as we're seeing. I rode motorcycles for several years myself, and I don't see this section as particularly hazardous, although events are proving me wrong. Also, and this is backed up by the RCMP officer that I talked to a couple of days ago, the accidents typically do not involve younger less experienced rider on fast bikes. In the majority of cases, the riders are older ( the RCMP officer guessed about 40 to 60 on average), and they typically involve more traditional touring type bikes. Excessive speed doesn't appear to me to be a factor either, which is probably part of the reason that we typically don't have serious life-threatening injuries. With the layout of that section of road, I would have expected more problems with rider going too fast to make the sharp left hand turn at the bottom of the hill, but as far as I can tell all the incidents have occurred partway down the hill before the bikes even got to the left hander.
Eventually this problem should go away, as the plans are to build a new bridge to bypass switchback. However, in spite of assurances that the bridge was to be built this summer, I haven't seen any signs of activity for it, and I think it will be at least another year before we see it.
Hope this helps prevent a few injuries.
