Riders for Safety Event (Malahat Safety) - 2011/11/04 15:12
From Mike Horner

Hiya folks,

I'm sensitive to the emotional sensitivity some may have to the most recent motorcycle fatality but thought you may wish to know of this upcoming event. Although this is not a "club based" ride many clubs are working together to organize this event.

Since this most recent fatality, there has been a general call to rally riders and supporters to highlight the safety issue posed by the MALAHAT roadway system and for the "powers-to-be" to implement solutions for safety sake - e.g. placing concrete barriers at the high fatality locations of the Malahat. If you are so inclined: Please join us in support of "Riders for Safety Event." (Attached) a pamphlet for the event. Thanks and my best to all.

MLA's, EMS and bikers will be present and we're hoping for many... MANY more participants on the lawn, to help send a msg to DOT (below) for a safer Malahat.

Event: Vancouver Island Safety Council invites all riders to a mass ride "Riders for Safety"
When: Saturday Nov. 5th
Start Location: Odgen Point Parking Lot
Time: 14:30 (be there early for safety brief)

End Location: Moment of Silence for ALL those loved ones lost on the Malahat: Front of the Legislature
Time: 15:45

Message: To call attention to safety changes which need to be made to high fatality locations on the hwy. This event ends with the moment of silence vigil at exactly 3:45.
If you're bike is off the road, please feel free to show in gear or reg clothes

For your info... CMC and Blue Knights on board...

Dear Mayor and Council,
As you may be aware, there has been another motorcycle fatality on the Malahat. Another fatality where the motorcyclist was not at fault, but rather due to a vehicle crossing the centre line and coming into the path of the motorcycle. This accident not only took the life of a fellow biker, but the life of a husband and father of two.
The Malahat in itself is not a dangerous road. It becomes dangerous only when people choose to drive it unsafely. This in turn causes an unsafe condition for bikers as well as everyone else on this highway.
The Canadian Motorcycle Cruisers has been an active Club within this community since 2007 and has been promoting safe motorcycle riding since our conception. Over the years the Township of Esquimalt has recognized this and supported our efforts to promote this message. We would like to seek your support once again to get a message out to our provincial legislators by way of an endorsement to this letter requesting the Province step up to the plate and make the highway from Goldstream Park to Mill Bay a safer road.
We are asking the Province to place divider barriers the entire length of this highway leaving a gap where safe, to allow emergency vehicles to turn around and allow wildlife to cross. This gap would not be more than one and a half car widths. By doing so, vehicles would not be allowed to cross the centre line and come into oncoming traffic. This is a low cost solution to a very dangerous situation.
Could we please count on your support with an endorsement to this proposal?
Sincerely,

M.J. (Mike) Horner
