My name is Mike Kelly, and I have been the co-ordinator of Canada's team at the ISDE (International Six Days of Enduro, also known as the Olympics of motorcycling) for the last three years, and have attended the event as part of the volunteer support crew more than 20 times.
I am sending out this open letter to everyone in Canada involved in off-road motorcycling — the clubs and promoters, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, the riders and spectators — in hopes of clearing up some misconceptions and to ask for your help.
Canada has a long and proud history of participation in the ISDE, having won the Watling Trophy for Most Improved Team twice, and finishing in the Top 10 of both the World Trophy and Junior Trophy (for riders under 23) on several occasions. But due to various factors, including the economic downturn and the rise of “extreme” events such as Xtinction, Erzberg and Romaniacs, interest and support for the event has tailed off. As a result it has been a struggle to send teams since 2010.
Canadian participation in the ISDE is dependent on the CMA (Canadian Motorcycle Association), as they are the sole body affiliated with the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) under whose rules and governance the event is run. They are responsible for handling all the paperwork to secure the FIM licences, submitting the entries and providing the necessary insurance, as well as sending a delegate to the Jury that oversees the race. For the past several years they have also provided money to pay the deposit on the accommodation which needs to be done far in advance, and administered the monies to pay the balance and refund any overpayments.
However, they never have been (and probably never will be) in a position to fund riders or teams, which is where the Gold Fund comes in. The pioneers of Canadian involvement in the ISDE (Jim Kelly and Dave Armstrong chief among them) tried to address this problem by creating the Gold Fund as a focus for fundraising and donations to help subsidise the cost of attending, which is currently estimated at between $15-20,000 per rider. The International Six Day Enduro Gold Fund Association is now an incorporated, non-profit body with a current board of directors consisting of Blair Sharpless, Barry Rempel and Alan Lachapelle (all multi-time ISDE competitors) as well as Muriel “Butch” Kelly and Hazel Armstrong, the widows of Jim and Dave.
The Gold Fund is an independent entity, not controlled by the CMA, AMA or FIM, and 100 percent of funds raised go toward supporting the riders. Monies are raised through the sale of shirts, corporate sponsorship and donations from clubs and individuals, and over the past several years these have combined to just about cover the approximately $6000 that is being spent annually on support and to maintain and transport the equipment that has been purchased or donated (tool kits, easy-ups, tire machines, oil, gas cans, crates, communications equipment, etc).
But now it's time to step it up! We want to send both Junior Trophy and Women's Cup teams to the 100th Anniversary ISDE in Sardinia, Italy on Sept 30-Oct 5, 2013. We want to send the BEST riders we have, not just those who can afford to go. We already have letters of intent from most of the top riders eligible for those classes, but we need YOUR help.
So here's my appeal.
To the clubs and promoters, you can join the Gold Fund for $500 and have a voting representative on how the money is spent. You can put a levy on memberships, donate a loonie from every entry fee, or hold an ISDE fundraiser — or all three!
To the manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers whose bread and butter is the off-road market, financial and product donations will gain exposure for your company through bike graphics, shirt logos, mentions on our Facebook page and media coverage of the event — it is unique in the motorcycle world and deserves your support!
To all the riders and spectators who love the sport and are proud to be Canadian, please support us by buying a t-shirt or making a donation to the Gold Fund. Visit and like our Facebook page, “Team Canada at the ISDE.” Tell your friends what it's all about and ask your club or promoter what they plan to do to help make Team Canada the best it can be.
