March 12, 2007 Mayencourt Introduces Fifth Private Members Bill: Motorcycle Noise Control Act
Victoria – Vancouver-Burrard MLA Lorne Mayencourt introduced the Motorcycle Noise Control Act last Thursday in the Legislative Assembly, a Private Members Bill that would strengthen already established legislation, the Motor Vehicle Act, in order to curb excessive noise caused by motorcycles in residential areas.
“The purpose of this Act is to reduce excessive noise from motorcycles in communities across the province,” said Mayencourt. “In Vancouver, complaints about loud motorcycles are reaching an all-time high, and noise pollution is a growing concern for many people."
The Act would require motorcyclists to have a muffler that cools and expels exhaust without exceeding the maximum noise level of 85 decibels in residential areas where the posted speed limit is 60 km/h or lower. Current regulations permit 91 decibels. The City of Edmonton recently introduced bylaws similar to the proposed legislation, also at 85 decibels.
Mayencourt continues: "Most motorcyclists in B.C. are law-abiding citizens that share an appreciation of the need to minimize the impact of excessive noise. That's why I will work with the BC Coalition of Motorcyclists to establish an annual Motorcycle Noise Awareness Campaign to ensure that neighbourhoods are not subjected to unnecessary noise."
This is the fifth Private Members Bill introduced by Mayencourt. The Safe Schools Act, Trespass Act, Safe Streets Act and Apology Act have all been adopted and/or passed by government.
