A Disturbing Incident at Cycle Park reported at the May General Meeting by our hard working Secretary Rachel Olsen.
A few weeks back Rachel noticed a young rider circling around the parking lot and approached the rider to let him courteously know that, for safety reasons, it was against the posted rules.
Almost immediately the parent, a member, used inappropriate language, saying that his son can ride where he wants. As the rider went around again, this child “gave Rachel the middle finger!”
Rachel did not divulge the name of the parent, but she knows who he is.
Excerpts from the posted VMC Cycle Park Property – General Rules and Etiquette
No riding around on the gravel parking lot ring anytime – includes small bikes and young riders.
Club members should inform any rule or etiquette violators IN A NICE WAY on what the problem is and how to correct it.
Disrespectful, dangerous or damaging behaviour will not be tolerated. If you have a concern, bring it to the next meeting or contact one of the Executive.
Rachel being the nice person she is, followed the rules bringing it to the Executives and General Members attention, but would not name the violator.
As a club we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour.
We strongly suggest that the member in question make the effort soon to find an opportunity to apologize to Rachel.
Using profanity is egregious, particularly when it reaches the level of intimidating a woman who volunteers many hours for the good of the club.
We have to ask “what are you teaching your young son,” and we strongly suggest that your son should also apologize to Rachel!
This member should read the back of his membership card which states “They are at all times to observe the rules of the club, both written and unwritten, and to conduct themselves in a gentlemanly manner on all highways and byways”.
It is also specifically available to all club members in their Website Members Profile under “Governance/ Cycle Park Rules”.
If it happens again, the member will be identified, and will be required to attend a disciplinary meeting, and may be asked to turn in his Gate FOB and lose his membership privileges of riding at Cycle Park.
After this incident club members are requested to be extra vigilant and to report any such behaviour.
Again, as a club we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour.
