In early 2008, the VMC sponsored a Vancouver Island rider, Don Hatton, in his bid to compete in the Dakar Rally.  Unfortunately, the rally was cancelled due to security reasons.  Don has recently sent us this message:

"Hi guys.  First I want to thank you for your generosity I know how hard it is for a club to raise money, Your kind words and support were really appreciated last year.  I wanted to contact you personally to let you know that we have not let the events of 2008  deflect us from  our goal to  participate and complete the Dakar Rally.  We are confirmed in the 2009 Dakar Rally in South America. We are again involved in all the hard work and training required to finish the Dakar Rally.  In addition to the 2009 Dakar Rally we have also entered the Morocco Rally in September.
