Major Funding Announcement! On Friday June 22, 2007, the group achieved what would have been considered unthinkable a few years ago: after successfully negotiating with the various parties and stakeholders in the Bear Creek area, the OTRA has been awarded $275,000 for the improvement of the riding area. No, that ain't a misprint. Read all about it on the site.

Now that there is funding in place, the OTRA is building a plan. So, the first event that will help all the parties get organized is a Workshop...
Off-Highway Vehicle Workshop For Provincial Managers, OHV Enthusiasts & Other Stakeholders July 13 & 14, 2007 University of British Columbia Okanagan 333 University Way Kelowna, British Columbia
The Ministry of Tourism, Sports, and the Arts and the Okanagan Trail Riders Association (OTRA) are conducting an off-highway vehicle management workshop. The session, Sustainable OHV Trails – How to Plan and Manage for Success, focuses on solutions and will be held at Okanagan University with the workshop on Friday 8am-5pm and a field trip to the Bear Creek Recreation Management Zone on Saturday 8am- 5pm. Registration is required, but attendance is free.
The workshop objectives are:
To discuss principles of successful OHV management To provide a basic understanding of the tools available to successfully plan and design sustainable OHV trails To show examples of success stories in order to build confidence that high-quality OHV trails can be balanced with resource protection To provide a forum for networking To help foster a working relationship between the enthusiast groups, Government, and other stakeholders With the continuing double-digit growth of motorized recreation, the OTRA and the government have long recognized the issues associated with the increased popularity of OHV use in British Columbia and the need for management to provide quality recreation opportunities, insure resource protection, and to avoid user conflicts. The hosts are conducting this workshop to address these issues and are encouraging off-highway vehicle enthusiasts and provincial managers along with all interested stakeholders to attend.
The presenters, Dick and Joani Dufourd of RecConnect LLC, are professional OHV consultants with extensive experience in the design and management of OHV trail systems. They consult internationally and conduct educational seminars, develop conceptual plans, and provide trail planning, design, and construction oversight services. Dick retired from the US Forest Service in 2005 after serving 35 years as a project engineer, OHV planner and designer, and OHV program manager. As the Central Oregon Interagency OHV Program Manager, he was responsible for implementing several designated, managed OHV trail systems. Joani has extensive experience working with recreational and land use issues and she has learned to work collaboratively with land managers for the last 25 years. She has helped establish clubs and knows the importance of volunteer participation. She was one of the founders of the Oregon Recreation Coalition and has lobbied for both state and national issues. She has assisted in the layout and design of over 300 miles of OHV trails and understands the key elements of successful OHV management. Both work to promote access and responsible use of public lands.

The Okanagan Trial Riders Association is a non profit society dedicated to preserving your right to ride in the Okanagan Valley and Central Interior. Those rights are not automatic, and are constantly under threat by groups who want you to park your bike forever. Members of the Okanagan Trail Riders Association have been working towards the creation of a top quality riding area in the Bear Creek area for many years. Success is starting to come with the establishment of the Bear Creek RMZ in the Land Resource Management Plan. Much more work is needed to manage this area with the creation of groomed, signed, and mapped trails for your use. If you are not a member of the OTRA, join now.
Call for GPS Files: If you have GPS files of the Bear Creek area, please email them to the OTRA webmaster. We are going to start to organize these files into areas and post them on the web site for members and visitors to use. Files are starting to come in, but we need a big library. If you don't use it, you're going to lose it.

Just another point of interest: My Wife and I just came back from Florence Oregon where OHV'ers and other users of Oregon Dunes National Park co-exist very well. There is a line in the sand (pun intended - actually there's a sign on the beach) , where beyond dirt bikers quads and 4x4's were frolicking on the beach and dunes happily with their owners -while others were resting (men and women of all ages) , with their toys by their side sunbathing and picnicking. Sounds like another piece of OHV heaven... Can anyone close their eyes and picture something like that on Vancouver Island?
