Hi,
As a member of the VMC XC Committee, we are doing something. I agree with you on our loss of XC riding areas has reduced the current club riding situation to trials, but we have been very active in the past three months. We have been working with the Ministries to establish a permanent home for our XC riders to ride and have enduros on.
We have meet with MoTSA representatives, found an area they approve of, and made a formal application for a trailbuilding permit for an area west of Jordan River on Crown land. This will establish us in an area as a permanent steward. The area is roughly 1500 acres, and will link into a much larger area later.
Ken and I have lead a very small group of dedicated merry trail cleaners out on 5 sundays so far to survey and clean the present skid trails. Once the permit is approved, link trails will need to be established. So I encourage anyone who wants a XC area to ride, to contact Ken @Kenco (250-642-3924), and come out and clean up all the winter blow down, etc. in the new area. There is lots of work to be done before we can hope to have an enduro. Right now we can clean old skid roads, survey the area, flag/blaze potential new trails, design the loops to give us maximum circuit distance for both Novice and Expert riders, etc.
On a non-club note, I have started Vancouver Island Outdoor Recreation Coalition (VIORC), as a multi-user recreation coalition to work with/against TimberWest to change/soften their current stance towards recreation on their 850,000 acres. Help me out with moving VIORC forward, and us getting access to TimberWest lands back. Membership is open to outdoor recreationists that are a member of a club and/or the recreation industry. No club appointments required to reduce politics.

Thanks for the info, it sounds promising. I'd seen your poste about trail clearing, sorry the timing hasn't worked for me so far (there are just so many sites needing clearing, but I'm trying). Hopefully I'll be able to free up some time soon.

I am in full agreement.As a past member who would be only happy to re join if there was actually any xc events.The amount of xc events has declined year by year to this year where there are absolutely none.It would be really nice to see someone take the reigns and actually make something out of this club.

I also thank you for getting the ball rolling on this. One of the main reasons I joined the VMC was that I knew, someday, we would be fighting to keep land open. I had expected the VMC to take the lead in this, but if a new organisation is needed, then so be it. Could you please provide some more information or links to VIORC?
Also, just as an idea, I have long thought that the tax angle is the best way to go after access to private forest land. These landowners get considerable tax breaks by declaring their land is used for timber harvesting. As BC citizens, that's OUR taxes they are avoiding paying. It seems to me that making reasonable access for recreational purposes a necessary part of claiming this reduced-tax status would be something to pursue. After all, not many environmental groups are going to be siding with the logging companies on this.
On the other hand, if we compete with environmentalists for those lands not privately owned (very little of which is in southern Vancouver Island), then we are going to lose.

Hey peter,really happy to hear someone has stood up to save xc.I would be more than happy to help out any way i can.Will also contact ken so we can get some trails going.I guess the blow down trail clearing tim and I have done at boyds is pretty much useless,so we would be happy to help somewhere we can hold events.
