Pit-squiding problems coming back to bite us - 2008/06/19 10:44
Anyone got any ideas or suggestions of how to tackle the pit-squid problems that seem to be prevailing at Tugwell Main, Shawnigan Lake, and most every other urban rural interface where a certain group of OHV riders are present?
This is a long going on thing, but is really harming our land access and public perceptions of us and our chosen recreation.
Really not sure where to start with this short of burning their machines in a big celebration fire. Why they insist on wheeling up and down a gravel road with residents to impress their buddies, when there is world class riding to be had 2kms down the road is beyond my comprehension. Maybe the issue is one of a more urban view to riding vs. mine of being an outdoor recreationalist who rides.
Dealers need to be involved, us as a club, maybe the RCMP, local residents, and BCORMA as a provincial body working with the public and Government.

Yes, there are always a few bad apples to ruin it for the rest of us..... however, getting too many òfficials`involved, such as police, local politicians, crd, local residents and others etc, leads to the ònce and for all fix`aka complete shut down of the area to all. Why. Because this is the easiest and fastest fix, this is the path of least resistance as opposed to more time required and effort in correcting those few quilty culprits. I`ve seen it happen like this before.........
That leaves a `celebration fire`.

"Pit squiding" as you quip it seems to refer to individuals using an unauthorized area to ride their ohv's around - is that correct? I know that there's a collection of riders at the old shawnigan dry sort riding around on any given weekend.
Back 20 years or more ago there were alot more areas that a person could go and ride his dirt bike - with Burnt Bridge , Kapoor , Lake Cowichan , Butler - and even at one point Skirt Mountain and the Highlands - sure not authorized areas all but still places where someone could go and have some fun. Now in 2009 we find these spots closed - but there's even more people wanting to ride their db's and now with so many quads around - them too. Where are these squids supposed to go?
Seems the CVRD up here over the Malahat has no interest in supporting the sport in the least (no zoning for private moto track at Shawnigan , no approval for multi use site off Hillcrest).
The problem of off roaders plying their sport on unauthorized land isn't simply an issue for individuals and organizations in the sport , but an issue that has to be acknowledged by the local government with a positive and productive attitude towards finding solutions. Until then there will be "squiding " - there simply isn't enough authorized (and convenient) area for the enthusiast to ride on lower Vancouver Island....
Just as there will always be those knobs that prefer to dump their trash in the woods , there will always be those who rat up and down gravel roads and be generally irresponsible. No amount of fines or laws will deter the small amount that insist on doing that - but the majority of the others that are forced to ride in these areas would much rather go to a proper sanctioned area to have some Sunday fun.

By pit squiding, I'm referring to riding on roads, near houses, and making a general nuisance of themselves. West Shawnigan before Kapoor Hill is a good example. Driving resident squirrelly and bring the heat of the RCMP out.
You bring up good points about CRD and I don't know what to do about it. Every interaction I have had with them is negative and they view OHV uses as a Crown issue not theirs.
Have you checked out Tansky yet? It will have over 70 km of trail all signed & mapped, and a full parking area by this fall. It is only 15 minutes past Boyds and has hugh old-growth trees, beautiful views, and trails for the novice to expert.
