Hi Everyone,
First I would like to thank the hearty souls who came out and endured the rain & snow to survey & clean about 5-7km more skid trails today. As we clean more skid trails, we find more skid trails and great terrain to build single track on.

In answer to Derek, no the new area is not the hydro line area off Foul Bay Rd. It is west of Jordan River, off JR North Main. It is about 1500 acres in size, and already has 10 - 15 km of non-active grown-in skid roads. There is no recreational land use activity there now, so we would be seen as the primary recreational use stewards.
We are in the process gaining trail-building rights. The last word I had was that we should have permission in place within a month. From there the VMC can move forward and apply for non-exclusive tenure to the area (a much more involved process, and why we started with a trail-building permit to get the ball rolling as quickly as we could). Because it is Crown Land, we have the right to ride there now. The only way we lose that right as an activity group is if we don't observe environmental code when we create and use trails, i.e. don't continue to be good land stewards. This was discussed with the Ministry.
The purpose of gaining trail building permission is two-fold. No one is supposed to build permanent trails on Crown Land without permission, but more importantly, the trails will be registered. By being registered recreational trails, TFL25 forest holder has to respect our trails when they propose to harvest an area. Now WFP, has said that they would not be going into that area for 20 - 30 years.
As far as putting maps up on the web for members, remember this is a public access site, and I think it is prudent for us to keep it quiet from other users, until we are firmly entrenched in there. There was already evidence of a truck in the beginning of the entrance trail, which cut the overhead log we left to discourage them. Please discuss this with Dave Fair as the Director on the XC Committee and/or Ken if you think otherwise, or would like to come out and help with surveying and cleaning.

In a few weeks, conditions would be better for the kids. The creeks are a little high for the youngsters, and most of the work is heavier cleaning of winter blow-down.

So who is coming out this Sunday to continue developing the new XC area? The weather is supposed to be better than last weekend.
We could use 2-3 crews to clean the skid trails we have found. If we can get the VMC members out, we could get a major amount of the cleaning completed this Sunday. Then it is surveying and flagging of new single track connectors and loops.
With over 200 members, where are the people that want a XC area to ride? Come out and make it happen. See you at the Castle in Sooke, 9am this Sunday.
